DESIGN | Take Me To Neverland Nursery
When uber-stylish first time mommy-to-be Kate Dye found out she was having a boy she was a bit nervous. "I think it's natural to picture yourself with a baby of your own gender because it's familiar to you." admits Kate. But that nervousness didn't last long as visions of her son, a mini-me of her husband, running around their Virginia home got her so excited that she knew she had to begin working on the nursery immediately.
With a little help from Pinterest, and a lot of help from her husband, family members and best friend, Kate transformed their once boring spare room into a whimsical and calming nursery, pouring love and meaning into every detail.
After seeing what Kate had accomplished I was so inspired and knew it had to be shared with all of you.
So today we are taking a little trip to Neverland.
Kate's initial idea for the room was to create a woodlands setting, but her Pinterest research proved that this idea was everywhere, however, a Neverland themed room seemed unique.
"I liked the idea of doing something that hadn't been done too many times before." Kate says. "I also knew that even though Peter Pan is a Disney movie, I didn't want the room to look cartoonish. Instead, I wanted the interpretation to feel more whimsical."
The first thing Kate stumbled upon was this amazing directional wooden sign that ended up being the inspirational starting point for the entire room. As a huge supporter of small businesses and the families behind them, Kate purchased every single piece of artwork in the room from an Etsy shop. I just love that.
Sticking with colors she likes best, Kate chose a very light whitish blue paint color, ( it's this one! ) she mixed and matched white furniture with wooden pieces, kept the bedding and curtains neutral and brought in pops of color (my favorite being the pops of green!) in the form of artwork and accessories to tie back to the directional sign.
This industrial pipe and rope hanging shelf from Restoration Hardware is one of my favorite things in the room. It reminds me of a ladder or a swing and works so well with the theme of the room without being too cutesy. Not to mention it's styled perfectly complete with a dash of pixie dust!
Kate worked directly with the talented artist who created the watercolor paintings of Peter Pan characters hanging above the dresser and these quickly became one of her favorite and most beloved things in the room.
"I'm drawn to these watercolor paintings for so many different reasons." Kate says. "They bring the characters of the movie into the room without looking cartoonish, the colors are so vibrant and beautiful and lastly they were purchased from an Etsy shop where the owners were so wonderful to work with that they even created a custom piece for me that wasn't in their shop to better fit the nursery. I was in awe of the result."
Instead of going with a traditional changing table, Kate chose this wooden dresser from Pottery Barn. This is a piece that will transition nicely as her son Hudson moves out of the toddler stage. It's made out of reclaimed wood and is available in a variety of wood colors.
The striped chevron knit blanket was handmade by Kate's mom. "She chose the colors on her own without even knowing what the nursery was going to look like and it ended up working perfectly in the room!" Kate explains. "She gave it to me at my baby shower and it's one of the most special things to me."
What I was most impressed about when I saw the pictures of the nursery was how Kate was able to take her ideas and inspirations and make it all come to life in a gorgeous and tasteful way.
The nursery is an extension of their home as Kate remained true to her modern, clean and timeless style creating a room that Hudson will be able to enjoy for many years to come. A labor of love fit for a prince.
It's definitely safe to say, this room is "to Dye for".
